The Mental Health Stigma: Breaking Down Barriers is a Global Challenge

Globally, more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression. Although there are well-known psychological and pharmaceutical treatments, fewer than half of those affected in the world (in many countries, fewer than 10%) receive such treatments. Barriers to effective care include:

  • Lack of trained health-care providers and resources
  • Social stigma
  • Inaccurate assessments

While many individuals battling depression do not receive the treatment they need, others without the disorder are often misdiagnosed and prescribed antidepressants. Additionally, national health systems have not yet adequately responded to the pervasive burden of mental disorders.
