Building Mental Health Awareness and Support in the Workplace

World Mental Health Day

October 10 is World Mental Health Day. This year’s theme is Dignity in Mental Health: Psychological and Mental Health First Aid for All.  “Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved.”

The workplace is a natural fit for a focus on mental health in general, and mental health first aid in particular, because colleagues and managers may be the first to recognize the signs of mental health issues in their co-workers.

Mental and emotional health is an important issue for global employers because:

Employers can play an important role in supporting positive mental health in the workforce by providing:

  • Culturally relevant mental health benefits
  • Programs that promote work/life balance
  • Employee assistance services
  • Peer support and referral programs (such as mental health first aid)
  • Educational materials that combat stigma and encourage mental health treatment when needed

Employers who want to learn more about this topic can join us at the 2017 Employers' Forum on Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being in San Francisco, California, January 25-26, 2017.
